Bergen aan Zee and the area

Because Bergen aan Zee is free of big hotels, bars and nightclubs, it has managed to retain a peaceful atmosphere. The town is located among the dunes at the endless North Sea shore, but still very central. Alkmaar, a beautiful old city where you can visit the famous cheese market during the summer months, is 12 km away. But also a day trip to Texel, Haarlem (45 km) or Amsterdam (50 km) is easily done.

Apart from sunbathing at the beach or going for a relaxing walk among the dunes, you can also have a coffee or meal during the magnificent sunset at one of the many beach huts that are open all year round. At 150m distance you can find a shop which sells fresh rolls every morning. So, despite the tranquillity, the town can offer you everything that is necessary to make your holiday unforgettable and exciting.

From Parkzicht apartments it’s only a 200m cycle to the entrance of the dunes, where you can go for a walk or cycle on one of the many signposted routes like the ‘Brede duinen route’ or the ‘Duinstreekroute’. You can cycle through the beautiful dunes and encounter wild horses, highland cows and rabbits. During the ride you can visit the neighbouring towns like Egmond, Schoorl, Bergen and Groet.

Apart from walking, cycling, sunbathing, swimming, sailing and surfing there is lots to do in the area, only 150m away lies the maritime aquarium where you can admire more than 300 kinds of fish. Bergen is 5 km away, a bustling town with many nice restaurants and special boutiques.

There is also a lot of culture on offer. Bergen is famous for being a painting town, thanks to the many local artists, authors and poets. Many are born or have moved there since to create various forms of art. The amazing freshly restored art museum Kranenberg is in Bergen as well. During the autumn holidays there is the annual 10-day art festival, where throughout the town beautiful works of art are displayed in restaurants, hotels, public buildings and in peoples’ homes. The beautiful old Alkmaar (12 km) is also definitely worth a visit. Besides the famous cheese market, you can spend all day shopping or visiting one of the many museums. But also the surrounding towns Egmond, Schoorl, Groet and Camperduin are worth seeing.

Bergen aan Zee, with all its peace and activities, isn’t just a summer destination. All year long, in every season, Bergen aan Zee means enjoying the various things Bergen has to offer. In the calendar you can find an overview of all activities, markets and festivals.
